Week of October 19, 2026 · Issue #1
Snap-back or regime change?
This week's verdict: the model odds favor a short-term rebound. The bigger picture is mixed.
Welcome to the first issue of The Market Verdict. Each week I'll show you what our models see, how last week's probabilities turned out, and the risks behind the numbers. The misses get reported too.

The odds board
All three major index ETFs start the week with probabilities above 68% of a higher close by Friday:
| ETF | 5-day odds | Last week | 50-day trend |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPY | 68.92% | 74.1% | No clear trend |
| QQQ | 71.03% | 33.4% | Up |
| IWM | 72.31% | 59.3% | Down |
QQQ's jump is the story. After falling nearly 5% last week, it closed Friday at $709.80, below the bottom of its regression channel. Our models include mean-reversion behavior, and a stretch that far from trend is the kind of move that tends to raise short-term recovery odds.
That's a five-day estimate. It doesn't tell us whether the larger decline is over.

Last week's scorecard
All three ETFs finished lower, Monday close to Friday close (October 12–16):
| ETF | Odds | Actual change |
|---|---|---|
| SPY | 74.1% | −1.91% |
| QQQ | 33.4% | −4.86% |
| IWM | 59.3% | −2.68% |
SPY −1.91%, despite a 74.1% probability of a higher close. A miss.
IWM −2.68%, from a 59.3% probability.
QQQ −4.86%, consistent with its weak 33.4% probability.
One week neither proves nor disproves a probability model. A 74% estimate still loses about one time in four. That's why every result is posted, so you can judge how the probabilities hold up over time.

The probability pulse
Of the 305 stocks we score, only 60 (19.7%) show probabilities of 75% or higher. Another 100 sit between 50% and 75%, and 145 (47.5%) are below 50%. The index odds lean toward a bounce, but strong odds are far from widespread.

The risks behind the drop
AI financing. CoreWeave shares fell more than 20% last week, and yields on some of its bonds briefly topped 16%, on roughly $50 billion of debt (Reuters). It's an extreme case, but it captures the question investors are asking: will tomorrow's AI profits justify today's borrowing?
Inflation. September consumer prices rose 3.7% from a year earlier, and producer prices jumped 1.3% in one month (BLS). Brent crude settled Friday at $109.86.
Oil and Iran. Iran has renewed an offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the US accepts its conditions. No deal yet.
What to watch: Meta, Tesla and IBM earnings Wednesday after the close, and US flash PMIs on Friday.
The bottom line
The probabilities favor a higher week, even while the risks behind last week's selling remain unresolved. A rebound in prices isn't the same as a recovery in the outlook. Next Sunday, we'll compare these odds with what actually happened.
